"Two frigate birds cruised on high, wings and split tails like drawn swords." (p. 70)
The frigate birds join our list of birds of prey while their sword-like wings and tails symbolize the inter-species conflict below them.
Among the intelligent seals, the alpha bull who grunts:
"'[So shall flow this tide.]'" (ibid.)

Kaor, Paul!
Because of how I quoted recently from the Foreword to Anderson's collection SEVEN CONQUESTS, I've gotten interested in rereading some of the stories in that book. E.g. "Kings Who Die" and "Strange Bedfellows."
Been feeling grim and angry lately. The catastrophe in Afghanistan and the disgrace and humiliation that BUNGLER, "Josip" (and his puppet masters) has brought on the US has infuriated me! We can expect a resurgence in Muslim jihadist terrorism as Al Qaeda returns to Afghanistan. And China is already making menacing noises about "reunifying" with Taiwan because the Taipei gov't will no longer be able to count on US support. There's simply no end to the bad results of this disaster!
Bah! Even the "real" Emperor Josip would be better than our "Josip"!
Ad astra! Sean
