Flandry With Chives And Hooligan

Poul Anderson's Captain Flandry series, part of his Dominic Flandry series, part of his Technic History series, comprises three chronologically linear sequences:

"Tiger by the Tail"
"Honorable Enemies"
"The Game of Glory"
"Hunters of the Sky Cave" (Chives and Hooligan)

"A Message in Secret"
"A Plague of Masters"

"The Warriors from Nowhere" (Chives and Hooligan)
A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows (Chives and Hooligan)

The absence of Flandry's servant, Chives, and personal spaceship, Hooligan, from "A Message in Secret" and its direct sequel, "A Plague of Masters" obliges us to place these two stories between "The Game of Glory" and "Hunters of the Sky Cave." (No, earlier.) If the two collections, Agent Of The Terran Empire and Flandry Of Terra, were to be reissued, then their contents ought to be rearranged accordingly.

I am starting to reread the "Captain Flandry with Chives and Hooligan" trilogy but will refer to the single-issue edition of "Hunters of the Sky Cave," which is entitled We Claim These Stars or We Claim These Stars!

Kaor, Paul!

I think it's necessary to keep in mind that we should not expect to see Chives and the "Hooligan" in all the Captain Flandry stories. There must have been good practical reasons for not seeing Chives and Flandry's personal space boat in all these stories.

Ad astra! Sean
