The Game Of Empire, CHAPTER SIXTEEN.
Targovi, watching Zacharia House, plays the role of a storyteller to young Cynthians. Thus, we read the "play within the play" of an unfinished Tigery tale. The wise female Dzhannit told the warrior Elgha and her companions that they must go to the Door of the Evil Root because beyond that lay wisdom which is knowledge of many new things, not money as Terrans might suppose. The road will be long and the next adventure might include combat with the Irs monster. (I.R.S.?) (I really do not remember any of this from previous readings.)
The colonized planet, Unan Besar, has traditional stories about Polesotechnarch Van Rijn or the Silver Bird but the new storyteller, Dominic, talks instead about Pierre the Fortunate, air war hero, resting in his beautiful home city of Paris which was visited by a stranger from uncouth Texas...
Dominic is interrupted by a man of the local boss who exacts tribute from street merchants, including storytellers. (I had completely forgotten about Pierre the Fortunate as well.)

Kaor, Paul!
It was amusing to see Targovi playing the story teller! And I too thought of how Dominic Flandry did exactly that as well on Unan Besar. I would liked to have known more about some of those traditional stories about Polesotechnarch van Rijn.
And Terrans did have stories about seekers of wisdom as well. E.g., Odin yielding up his eye for wisdom.
Ad astra! Sean
