"Hunting Through Hills..."

Many horrible things happen in fiction but sometimes the characters get to do exactly what they want. Diana Crowfeather runs away from home because:

"...Tigeries were hunting through hills where wind soughed in waves across forests, and surf burst under three moons upon virgin islands."
-Poul Anderson, The Game Of Empire, Chapter One, IN Anderson, Flandry's Legacy (New York, 2012), pp. 195-215 AT p. 214.

And, in another timeline:

"'What the Dunedain need is a base...We could claim this whole area...'"
-SM Stirling, The Protector's War (New York, 2006), Chapter Twenty, p. 548.

They will hunt and trade instead of farming. Yes!

Kaor, Paul!

With the caveat, of course, that Diana Crowfeather could not breathe the atmosphere of the lowlands of Imhotep. And we see no mention of her udergoing the surgery needed for implanting the oxygills that would enable her to do so. Tigeries like Targovi are seen using oxygills so they could breathe in the kind of atmospheres human need. This fortunately minor surgery would open up the whole Empire for ambitious Tigeries.

And the "neo-Dunedain" also took on military functions. Or hired themselves out as caravan guards.
