The Grand Survey

"2150 'Wings of Victory' (ASF, April,
          1972)
"The Grand Survey from Earth discovers alien races on Ythri, Merseia, and many other planets."
-Sandra Miesel, CHRONOLOGY OF TECHNIC CIVILIZATION IN Poul Anderson, The Van Rijn Method, compiled by Hank Davis (New York, 2009), pp. 611-619 AT p. 612.

"Crofton's Encyclopedia of the Inhabited Planets (2nd Edition):

"Sparta: Sparta (originally Botany Bay) was discovered by Captain Mark Brodin of the CoDominium Exploration Service ship Lewis and Clark during the Grand Survey of 2010."
-Jerry Pournelle and SM Stirling, The Prince (New York, 2002), p. 717.

Earth in Technic Civilization is the future capital of the Terran Empire.
Ythri is the future capital of the Domain of Ythri.
Merseia is the future capital of the Roidhunate of Merseia.
Sparta is the future capital of the First and Second Empires of Man.

The CoDominium Grand Survey is 140 years before the Technic Grand Survey and six years in our past. Nevertheless, there are two Grand Surveys. My theory is that the barrier between the timelines is weaker at such points. Thus, a ship leaving Technic Earth in 2150 might traverse the space of CoDominium Earth in 2010 before returning to its own universe. No such transtemporal breaches have been reported as yet but they must be theoretically possible. I have become accustomed to looking sideways across the timelines rather than backwards or forwards along just one of them.

Kaor, Paul!

I thought it was very interesting that the CoDominium timeline, like the Technic Civilization universe, also had a Grand Survey. And you made a very intriguing suggestion that a star ship from one timeline might traverse the same space in an alternate timeline. If individual persons can go from Timeline A to Timeline B (as in Anderson's THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS) why not SHIPS?
