At The Wall

"Smoke rose from Borcovicium fort..."
-Poul and Karen Anderson, Roma Mater (London, 1989), p. 13.

There was a Mithraeum at Borcovicium and our viewpoint character, Gratillonius, is a Mithraist.

"...paths twisting between houses in the vicus." (p. 14)

"...an officer...of the Halidom..." (p. 15)

"...that legion was based at Eboracum..." (p. 15)

"...report to him at once in the praetorium." (p. 16)

"'...not at Vindolanda?'" (p. 16)

Notes from Roma Mater, Chapter I, section 1, pp. 13-16.

Kaor, Paul!

I'm a little puzzled at the Andersons writing "...an OFFICER...of the Halidom." I would have thought "priest" or "acolyte" more natural terms to use. Well, "officer" is understandable once you take Mithraism quasi military organization into account.
