Poul Anderson, The Shield Of Time (New York, 1991).
Time Patrol Specialist Keith Denison gathers information among the Aryans in 1765 BC:
"Too bad that the knowledge couldn't be made public for thousands of years, after time travel had been developed, Denison thought. Meanwhile, scholars would exhaust their lives following merely archaeological clues, often onto wholly false trails... It wasn't for nothing. Their labors carved a bridgehead from which Patrol Specialists launched the real quests." (ST, p. 282)
Not only Patrol Speciailists, like Denison, Sandoval,
the Tamberlys, Farness, Floris and Ulstrup but also civilian scientists from future civilizations.
On British television, Tony Robinson (front row, left) presents "Time Team," which shows and interviews archaeologists at work. Because of the similar titles, I had already thought of "Time Team" as a precursor to "Time Patrol." Patrol Specialist Denison confirms this connection.
