On The Moon In Three Future Histories

Planetary Engineers, Serendipity, Inc. and Selenarchs have fortresses on the Moon in alternative future history series written by Poul Anderson.

At the Serendipity castle in the Lunar Alps:

"...a wide reach of land and sky around the site was forbidden - patrolled by armed men, guarded by robot gun emplacements - with that baronial absoluteness the great may claim in a civilization which exalts the rights of privacy and property." (p. 370)

We vicariously enjoy the lifestyles of the great and also witness the conflicts that those lifestyles generate.

"...the gravity field was set at about Earth standard, the usual practice in residences on dwarf worlds where muscles would otherwise atrophy." (p. 373)

Lacking gravity control, the Selenarchs are genetically engineered to spend their entire lives in Lunar gravity and therefore also in enclosed artificial environments which nevertheless are spacious, colourful and dynamic.

Kaor, Paul!

There's also "Strange Bedfellows," in which Anderson examines the idea of terraforming the Moon. An idea which still thrills me!

Besides going to Mars, I think Elon Musk also hopes to soon send manned expeditions to the Moon.

Frankly, I want expeditions from the US (or UK!) to get to the Moon before China does. I don't trust the current regime in Peking, given its ambitions and hostility to the US. If China can control the Moon, that would give the Maoists the high ground, a position from which it can dictate terms and impose its demands on the entire world!

If, at the very least, both the US and China have bases on Luna, that would preserve the balance of power.

"terraforming the Moon"
I like the rotating space habitat idea better. It give much more space to live in for the amount of material available & it allows one to have 'gravity' of 9.8 m/s^2

I have no objection to O'Neill habitats being built. I wish we had one or two now.

But I believe such habitats will come with weaknesses. In times of war in space I think such habitats will be vulnerable to being attacked and destroyed.

So I think planets, for all their drawbacks, will still be preferred by most off-Earth colonists, if available.

Elon Musk makes Howard Hughes look rational.

And I like what Elon Musk has been achieving, esp. at SpaceX! We need bold, daring, unconventional entrepreneurs. Men like Nicholas van Rijn and Anson Guthrie!
