Satan And Food

Satan is the ultimate villain in Poul Anderson's Operation Chaos and he or something like him is also the ultimate villain in SM Stirling's Emberverse. Since both works are parallel Earth scenarios, there is the theoretical possibility that these are the same Satan or different manifestations of the same etc. The Adversary fades out of the Operation... sequence and I have yet to read the Emberverse concluding chapter which ventures outside space and time.

The Sky-Blue Wolves, CHAPTER FIVE, gives us another lovingly described meal:

caviar on rye-toast;
chilled Chardonnay;
seafood broth with scallions and chunks of lobster;
winter spinach salad with chopped toasted walnuts, pomegranate seeds, feta cheese, dried cranberries, sliced pears, herby olive oil and apple vinegar;
Chenin Blanc;
warm crusty rolls and butter;
sliced marinated roast boar in dark gravy;
steamed halved Brussels Sprouts with lemon butter and chopped hazlenuts;
honey-glazed carrots;
cubed grilled potatoes with rosemary and garlic oil;
Pinot Noir;
fruit-tarts with whipped cream;
glazed confections of blueberries, dried candied apple and peach;
pastry shells containing toasted hazlenuts and walnuts on custard with cloves and nutmeg;
excellent Hawaiian coffee with rich cream and sugar.

Father Ignatius consumes only soup, bread and water. Here is a man who can resist everything and temptation. (I was thinking that the clergy ate well until I read this.)

Kaor, Paul!

These scrumptious meals so lovingly described by Stirling can be rather frustrating! Considering my basically sedentary life I know I CAN'T eat like this very often without doing serious damage to my health. Which means I often find myself eating like Fr. Ignatius!

Peanuts and peanut butter, for example, instead of caviar on rye toast!

Of course, Father Ignatius is a monk, not merely a clergyman, and a very scrupulous one at that.

And I recall the bit in one of your Emberverse books where the Bishop/Abbot of Fr. Ignatiius' order commented that the old joke about FAT monks was funny because of how RARELY monks were fat. Conscientious monks train themselves to live austerely.
