Future Histories Overview

Some future histories I am unfamiliar with and would welcome input:

Cordwainer Smith;
H Beam Piper;
Marion Zimmer Bradley.

The ones that I do know divide into four groups:

British
Wells
Stapledon
Aldiss
RC Churchill (not well known)

Campbell-edited
Heinlein
Asimov
Blish
Anderson

An American sequence (overlapping with "Campbell")
Heinlein
Anderson (2)
Niven
Pournelle

Anderson's later future histories
six or seven

The magnitude of Poul Anderson's contributions is evident from these lists.

Kaor, Paul!

I can hardly recommend reading Cordwainer Smith's "Instrumentality of Mankind" stories enough! I think very highly of those works! You can get the complete collection from NESFA Press OR more cheaply from used book stores.

The stories are set many thousands of years into the future where mankind had colonized many worlds and Earth is ruled by the ruthless but benevolent (if that's not a contradiction in terms!) Instrumentality of Mankind. The introduction to one Cordwainer Smith book I have says the author experimented with using Chinese tropes in the stories.

Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger (to use Cordwainer Smith's real name) spent many years in China was an Intelligence officer of the US in the 1940's and 1950's.
