See The Enemy.
"All beings together against a cruel cosmos" sounds like pieces of two different philosophes spliced together somehow.
The universe can be regarded as hostile or maternal depending on which of its aspects we emphasize. On the one hand, we evolved and are sustained in this universe, not anywhere else. On the other hand, we can survive in only a very narrow range of environments. But, on the other hand, the rest of the universe, the stars with their life-giving heat and light, are necessary to sustain the life-bearing planetary environments.
My pantheon includes Indra who sends rain, Prometheus who controls fire and Thor who kills giants of ice and frost.
We belong here despite ice and fire.
"All beings together" if they can see it that way.
Merseians can see it that way although they were originally introduced as cliched pulp green alien hostiles.

Kaor, Paul!
Exactly, Old Nick was right. The "universe," as such doesn't care beans whether or not "we" exist.
Ad astra! Sean
Yeah, and humans are intertribally competitive. Maybe an alien invasion would unite humanity... OTOH, maybe a lot of people would see it as a chance to get back at their enemies.
In the Anglo conquest of North America, there were always Indians fighting for the Anglos, because they hated their longstanding neighbors more.
Kaor, Mr. Stirling!
You reminded me of Pournelle/Niven's FOOTFALL, where the US and USSR did ally together to fight the invading aliens. Or it could have been like Anderson's "Soldier from the Stars," where the aliens got the humans to do their fighting for them. Human beings are simply like that, hashed up and chaotic in their politics.
Ad astra! Sean
