Continuing And One-Off Characters

Sixteen of the forty-three instalments in Poul Anderson's Technic History do not feature any of the continuing characters, Nicholas van Rijn, Adzel, David Falkayn or Dominic Flandry. Christopher Holm approaches continuing character status because he is one of the multiple viewpoint characters in one of those sixteen instalments, The People Of The Wind, and is then cited by Hloch as author or co-author of three of the twelve instalments that are collected as The Earth Book Of Stormgate. Hloch himself comes before us only in the twelve introductions and single aftermath of the Earth Book.

In "Rescue on Avalon," we find two new human characters, Jack Birnam and Ivar Holm, and recognize one surname. Christopher, in a later generation of Avalonian Holms than Ivar, will marry Tabitha Falkayn who is descended from both David Falkayn and Nicholas van Rijn.

Adzel is introduced in a story with first person narration by the one-off character, James Ching, although Hloch conveys some information about Ching's later career. Emil Dalmady is a one-off character but Hloch informs us that some of his children accompanied Falkayn to Avalon and that one them wrote three of the stories that are in the Earth Book, including the one about her father and another about Falkayn's grandson.
