The good news is that former enemies become allies.
There is a Klingon on the bridge of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
An Ythrian helps Terra against Merseia in The Day Of Their Return.
Dennitzans of Merseian descent are not agents of the Roidhunate and do not want their planet of residence to be annexed by their planet of origin. Dominic Flandry and Kossara Vymezal join a march of ychani/zmayi/Merseians to the planetary parliament where Flandry reflects that his only definite ally is Merseian by species.
The Bad News
Former enemies become allies against new enemies! But this might not always be the case on a planetary scale. Years ago, when John Brunner addressed the Lancaster Literature Festival, he quoted one of his own stories where a spaceship captain was called Chang, "a good Terrestrial name."

And we see a Captain Chang in "Tiger by the Tail," commanding the flag ship of Admiral Thomas Walton.

Anderson-Brunner convergence!
Kaor, Paul!
And these authors almost certainly read some of each other's works. I read one of Brunner's novels and a collection of his short stories.
