1146 A. D.
Volstrup, posing as Wanda's husband, feigns illness to give Lorenzo a clear field. When Lorenzo and Wanda ride out for a picnic, Poul Anderson presents his, by now always expected, multi-sensory description:
hoofs clatter;
city smells recede;
sunlight torrents;
streams are silver;
villages are white;
pastures are brown;
forest remnants are green but with autumnal tints;
birds cry;
cool air warms;
stirrups creak;
reins jingle;
leather, sweat and woodland tang;
a brook tinkles.
Four senses, not essential for the bare narrative but Anderson always gives us them anyway.
After this incident, Everard and Wanda are back in 1990 which, unfortunately, is as far forward as the story and the series take them.

Kaor, Paul!
A pity impatient readers don't like such details.
Ad astra! Sean
