Anniversaries And All

The events of Poul Anderson's "The Ways of Love" are occasioned by the tenth anniversary of the events of his The Enemy Stars because:

"...ten is a special number..." (p. 122)

- to "the Earthfolk." (ibid.)

Anniversaries might be a good way to unify a series, particularly a biographical or autobiographical one. Isaac Asimov wrote one sequel on this basis. Here is my idea for an sf trilogy -

Vol I: The 20th anniversary of the Martian Revolution. The six official Heroes of the Revolution prepare for and attend a banquet where each delivers an after-dinner speech. They allude to their deeds during the Revolution, e.g., we know that A saved B's life but do not know how etc. Someone says, "It did not happen like that."

Vol II: Prequel. The events of the Revolution, including the deeds of each of the Heroes.

Vol III: Sequel. The 40th anniversary. Most of the Heroes are still alive but how do they see things now? What has happened on Mars, on Earth and in the Solar System in all this time?

Kaor, Paul!

The closest analogy to this I can think of from Anderson's works would be the stories collected in TALES OF THE FLYING MOUNTAINS, after what became the Asteroid Republic broke away from the North American Union or Federation. And the framework used for that collection does shows us an elderly lady who took part in the Asteroid War of Independence.
