Earth is saved from environmental disaster by Artificial Intelligence in Poul Anderson's Harvest of Stars Tetralogy and by alien intervention in Julian May's Galactic Milieu Trilogy and from scientific dictatorship again by alien intervention in CS Lewis' Ransom Trilogy. Sf authors address current concerns and imagine fantastic solutions but, in the real world, it is down to us.

I agree, I don't expect a deus ex machina to resolve our most urgent problems. Either we'll muddle thru on our own or we will not.
