Smaragdine

"...patches of cloud-shadow drifted over smaragdine brightness in an infinite variety of greens..."
-SM Stirling, A Meeting At Corvallis (New York, 2007), Chapter Eighteen, p. 483.

My spell check does not recognize "smaragdine" but my Anderson fan sensibility did. I have noted one appearance of the word in Anderson's Technic History. See the above link.

The link simply links back to the same article. Obviously it's meant to go somwhere else.

Kaor, Ketlan!

I traced the link back to THE PEOPLE OF THE WIND. The word "smaragdine" was used by Poul Anderson to describe the view seen by Tabitha Falkayn in Chapter XIX (after saying goodbye to Philippe Rocheforte).

Also, if I recall correctly, the word smaragdine occurs in "The King of Ys," describing the foliage through which Gratillonius rides at one point.

Thank you, Nicholas. It would be good if you could find the quote?

Kaor, Nicholas!

It might be a small for most people, but we should stop occasionally to appreciate the skill shown by Poul Anderson in his use of language and knowledge of plain old VOCABULARY.
