How hibernators avoid extermination by carnivores:
camouflage;
shells;
spines;
poisonous tissues;
tunneling deep;
tunneling under rock;
being covered by glaciers;
prolificity;
the Domrath lash out if roused so most carnivores avoid them;
against others, they build shelters or go underground.
They killed a Merseian who disturbed them accidentally.
(It is good to read about what Merseians do when not trying to overthrow the Terran Empire.)

And the Domrath built gates and fences as well for keeping out carnivores from their hibernation dens. But what interests me is whether and how they can break out of the need to hibernate. For that they would also have to work out ways of surviving the LONG, frigid winters of Talwin.
Yes, on Talwin we see some Merseians whose primary interest was not in scheming to overthrow the Empire. Albeit, I have no doubt that if you asked, the scientists would say they favor doing that. In fact, that was the impression Djana got from them.
