The Rebel Worlds, CHAPTER FOUR.
Catawrayannis is surrounded by sparsely lit wilderness.
-copied from Llynathawr.
To expand:
"The hinterland, latifundia, mines, factories, soon gave way to forests, mountains, trafficless ocean, empty plains, a wilderness where lights gleamed rare and lonely after dark." (p. 400)
But that sounds good! Indeed, Flandry reflects:
"Of course, this has the advantage of not turning the planet as a whole into another cesspool..." (p. 401)

Kaor, Paul!
I think Flandry (or Anderson) was being too hard on Llynathawr. It seems to have been a reasonably successful colony. Given time the population would grow. And the capital city of Catawrayannis did have a population of a million. That implies several millions more spread across the planet in farms, plantations, and smaller cities and towns.
Ad astra! Sean
Sean: not necessarily. In the US as of 2020, only about 2% of the population actually produces food to any significant degree, and the number of miners and loggers is smaller.
And the Empire has better robotics than we do.
So the percentage engaged in primary production of all types could be very small.
Kaor, Mr. Stirling!
I agree you made good points. Which means Llynathawr could have a smaller population than I thought. All the same, I would still argue for considering it a reasonably successful colony.
Ad astra! Sean
