At The Wall

"Smoke rose from Borcovicium fort..."
-Poul and Karen Anderson, Roma Mater (London, 1989), p. 13.

There was a Mithraeum at Borcovicium and our viewpoint character, Gratillonius, is a Mithraist.

"...paths twisting between houses in the vicus." (p. 14)

" officer...of the Halidom..." (p. 15)

"...that legion was based at Eboracum..." (p. 15)

" to him at once in the praetorium." (p. 16)

"'...not at Vindolanda?'" (p. 16)

Notes from Roma Mater, Chapter I, section 1, pp. 13-16.

Kaor, Paul!

I'm a little puzzled at the Andersons writing " OFFICER...of the Halidom." I would have thought "priest" or "acolyte" more natural terms to use. Well, "officer" is understandable once you take Mithraism quasi military organization into account.
