Matuchek distracts the salamander with magnesium burning on water long enough for Virginia to recite the dismissal spell, beginning:

"'O Indra, Abaddon, Lucifer -'" (p. 88)

Later, we read four more words:

"' - abire ex orbis terrestris -'
"'Mg plus H2O yields MgO plus H2,' whispered Griswold reverently." (ibid.)

Virginia says, "- to go from the terrestrial orb -," while Griswold confirms the conservation of mass.

The salamander is dismissed, Steve and Virginia become engaged and the narrative proceeds to its second interlude.

O Indra...

Virginia begins the salamander dismissal spell by invoking six relevant deities:

Indra
Abaddon
Lucifer
Moloch
Hephaestos
Loki 

Personal associations:

I invoke Indra because he is the chief god of the Vedic pantheon which would have been known to Gautama, the Buddha, - indeed, Indra has roles in Vedism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism;

I am a fan of graphic novels by Neil Gaiman and Mike Carey featuring a version of Lucifer Morningstar.

Hearing the beginning of the invocation, the salamander attacks and the broomstick has to make an Immelmann turn. Read Poul Anderson and learn.

Gerd's Incantation

Gerda:

draws two concentric circles around a tripod brazier;

stands between them with her cat, Grimalkin;

explains that the inner circle will hold a demon whereas the outer will hold his enchantments;

asks Holger neither to pray nor to make the sign of the cross;

dances and chants (see the above link);

switches from Latin to some other language;

touches the brazier with her wand, bringing forth dense white smoke that almost hides her but remains within the outer circle;

invokes -

"'O Beliya'al,
"'Ba'al Zebub,
"'Abaddon, (scroll down)
"'Asmadai!
"'Samiel, Samiel, Samiel!'" (p. 22)

The smoke thickens into Samiel who tells Gerda that Holger is from so far away that a man could travel until Judgment Day and not reach it.
