This morning, over a second coffee, I took Ensign Flandry from a shelf and reread its opening pages. I could easily get drawn back into rereading the entire Young Flandry Trilogy although really it is too soon.
Ensign Flandry:
comes directly after The Earth Book Of Stormgate in the seventeen(or so)-volume reading order of Poul Anderson's Technic History or directly after The People of The Wind in the The Technic Civilization Saga edition;
introduces Dominic Flandry, a major series character;
introduces the Merseian Roidhunate as now the main antagonist of the Terran Empire;
introduces the Starkadians who reappear in The Game Of Empire;
introduces John Ridenour who reappears in "Outpost of Empire";
introduces Persis d'Io who will become the mother of Dominic Hazeltine who appears in A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows;
introduces Max Abrams, Flandry's mentor and father of Miriam Abrams who appears in A Stone In Heaven.

Kaor, Paul!
The beginning of Chapter 1 of ENSIGN FLANDRY, about that evening on Terra, Emperor Georgios, and the Imperial court, is very striking!
Ad astra! Sean
