Mild Wind

"Hunters of the Sky Cave," XVIII.

In Garth after the Vixenite occupation, roses:

"...nodded in a mild summer wind." (p. 299)

I have quoted this passage twice before. See:

Goodbye

Good By

However, on neither occasion did I make the obvious observation. Wind growls, hoots, booms, rumbles etc as appropriate in Poul Anderson's works but this time is mild in the peace after a war. The Pathetic Fallacy is (nearly) always with us.

Flandry lands at the main spaceport on Vixen, leaves Chives in charge of the Hooligan and takes an airtaxi to Garth which is peaceful in midsummer, no longer under alien occupation. He sees the Shaw and the Ridge, previously seen under different circumstances. This will be our last sight of Vixen as Flandry's career takes him elsewhere.

Kaor, Paul!

That "airtaxi" caught my eye. A pity we still don't have air cars!

Ad astra! Sean
