Introducing Manson Emmert Everard

After following a series character through multiple installments, it is good to remind ourselves of his introductory appearance:

for Sherlock Holmes, reread A Study In Scarlet;
for James Bond, Casino Royale;
for Nicholas van Rijn, "Margin of Profit";
for Dominic Flandry, "Tiger by the Tail";
for Manse Everard, "Time Patrol."

Everard
born, 1924
bachelor
bibliophile
big
blocky shoulders
battered face
brown hair
crew-cut
US Army Engineers, discharged
design and production work in the US, Sweden and Arabia
poker player
camper
fisherman
interested in sailboats, horses and rifles
Midwesterner (we are told this later)
recruited to the Time Patrol, 1954

- and the rest is history.

(But we forget most of this as we read the series.)

Kaor, Paul!

And we have two versions of "Margin of Profit" and "Tiger by the Tail," after Anderson decided it was necessary to revise the original texts.

Ad astra! Sean

Born 1924... 7 years after my father, 2 years before my mother, and like my father (and father-in-law) a WWII veteran of the European theater. Which is how I ended up being born in France.

Everard and my father-in-law might have met! He was a dogface in the 2nd Infantry division, and fought from D-Day +2 to the end of the war, all the way from Normandy to Pilsen in what's now the Czech Republic.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

An INTRIGUING notion, a "real" Everard meeting your future father-in-law!

There are some real persons I would have liked to have met: Poul Anderson (of course!), JRR Tolkien, or Fr. Raymond Brown.

Ad astra! Sean
