Aha! Julian May's SAGA OF PLIOCENE EXILE is one of those series I really want to reread (and its successor, the GALACTIC MILIEU series). I did boggle a bit at the idea of non human aliens, no matter how "humanoid," being able to have fertile offspring from mating with humans.
