The Camel's Nose

"'...the bugger has forgotten the saying about the camel's nose.'"
-SM Stirling, The Scourge Of God (New York, 2009), Chapter Seven, p. 200.

What saying about the camel's nose?

"'If the unions get that kind of voice in management, it won't be the camel's nose in our tent. No, by damn, it will be the camel's bad breath and sandy footprints, and soon comes in the rest of him and you guess what he will do.'"
-Poul Anderson, Mirkheim IN Anderson, Rise Of The Terran Empire (Riverdale, NY, 2011), Y minus 9, p. 15.

Thank you for a colourful metaphor, Nicholas van Rijn. However, googling reveals that the expression predates van Rijn. See here.

Kaor, Paul!

Well, colorful terms like the "camel's nose" often did pre-date Poul Anderson's time. What I liked was how often he creatively and imaginatively used or reinvented them.
