In James Blish's The Day After Judgment:
the demon fortress of Dis manifests on the Earth's surface in Death Valley;
the United States Strategic Air Command attacks Dis and is annihilated by demons in an air battle above the city.
In Poul Anderson's Operation Chaos:
the Matucheks on broomsticks invade Hell and attack a demon castle;
Ginny weaves spells that protect them from curses and other magical attacks;
Steve resists physical attacks with cutlass, hands and teeth;
they arrive before the changeling has been exchanged for Valeria...
Temporal paradoxes are to be avoided but I am not sure that I understand what is said about them:
"If the kidnaper found himself unable to make it back with his victim, God alone knew what would happen. They'd certainly both leave our home and a changeling replace them. But we'd have no inkling of how this came about or where they'd gone." (p. 267)
Why not?
