Romans Against Chaos

The Roman legions withdrew from Britannia in Gratillonius' lifetime. From Ys, he corresponded with perhaps the pre-Arthurian generation of British chiefs.

Manse Everard of the Time Patrol and Hanno the immortal visited the post-Roman Britain of different timelines. Hanno met perhaps the original of Arthur.

Steven and Virginia Matuchek named their daughter Victrix after "'...the last Roman legion in Britain.' The last that stood against Chaos..." (Operation Chaos, p. 123)

"Victrix" is Valeria's true name known only by four people, herself, her parents and the doctor who delivered her - so Matuchek should not broadcast it to other timelines? Sometimes we accept that the first person narrator of a novel is addressing a specific audience. At other times, we pretend that he is the omniscient narrator addressing no one in particular. Is it a secret that Superman is Clark Kent or that the Batman is Bruce Wayne? Yes - but everyone on Earth Real knows it.

Kaor, Paul!

Once you pointed it out, it does seem odd of Steven Matuchek to have mentioned his daughter's "secret" name of "Victrix" if it was supposed to be SECRET.

Hmmm, if Valeria Matuchek had been a boy, would her,or rather his name have been "Valerius"? And the secret name "Victor"? That too would have tied in even more with Gaius VALERIUS Gratillonius and his old legion.

Sean,
"-us" and "-tor" are the correct masculine endings.
Paul.

And, on a VERY tangential note, one of the books I read long ago was Vladimir Nabokov's ADA. The novel is set in an alternate world where the KING of Great Britain in the period covered by OUR world's Queen Victoria was named "Victor."
