On Mayast III

After Doomsday, 9.

We learn that the natives of Mayast III are the Loho and that the above-ground part of the Kandemirian installation, with its domes, towers and parked spaceships, is called Dzhugach Base.

Wind bounces smoking rain off roofs, flattens trees and turns mud into streams. Lightning glares. Thunder bangs. Loho families crawl into beehive huts and wallow together. They do not work, even for their Tall Masters, the Kandemirians, in weather like that.

(One of James Blish's Okie characters has to be reminded that planetary surfaces have a phenomenon called "weather." Poul Anderson's readers never forget.)

Despite this weather, the Kandemirians want to test the human-built paragrav detector and the men's nervous reaction tells us that something is afoot but, blogwise, it will have to remain afoot for a while longer.

Have a good night.

Kaor, Paul!

We're given some details about the Terran Naval Base on Irumclaw in A CIRCUS OF HELLS, when Flandry was posted there for a year. And, despite being considered by most a minor "outpost of empire," it really was important.

Ad astra! Sean
