Two Future Histories

Poul Anderson's Psychotechnic and Technic Histories have parallel structures:

Psychotechnic
World War III.
UN world government, then Solar Union.
The Second Dark Ages.
The Stellar Union.
The Third Dark Ages.
Galactic Civilization.

One story about post-War reconstruction.
No stories set during either Dark Ages.
One story (disputed) set in the Galactic Civilization.

Technic
The Chaos.
The Solar Commonwealth.
The Troubles.
The Terran Empire.
The Long Night.
Civilizations in several spiral arms.

One Story about post-Chaos reconstruction.
One each during the Troubles and the Long Night.
One in the civilization of the Commonalty.

Kaor, Paul!

Strictly speaking, we don't have any stories by Anderson set during the Troubles actually describing those Troubles, unless you meant "The Star Plunderer," at its tail end.

The Terran Empire never claimed to be the Galactic Empire.

Sean,

Well, "The Star Plunderer" is pretty Troublesome. I've changed the Empire.

Kaor, Paul!

We see plenty of those Troubles in "Plunderer"! The Commonwealth had totally collapsed, barbarians were raiding and sacking Earth at will.

I noticed, re the Empire. Terra never tried to rule more than enough of the galaxy sufficient to defend itself and its civilization against all comers.

That "Time of Troubles" was exaggerated, I think. Note that Rome was never endangered (except by Romans) during the collapse of the Republic and the rise of the Empire.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

When I think of the agonies a small part of Earth, Haiti, is suffering I can't be so confident a Time of Trouble as bad as that of the Technic timeline is impossible.

Sean: well, yeah, but Haiti isn't going to become a Great Power anytime soon...

In fact, Haiti would be infinitely better off now if it had remained a French colony. Compare and contrast with Martinique.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I agree with both of your points. The miserable history of unlucky Haiti since independence is proof it would have been better off remaining a French colony.

I was trying to say, assuming an interstellar Time of Troubles like that of the Technic stories, many planets would be attacked/ravaged by pirates and warlords. And be as miserable as Haiti.
