A Prequel And A Sequel

Poul Anderson's Time Patrol series had been complete as:

four stories collected in Guardians Of Time which became five in The Guardians Of Time;

two longer stories published as Time Patrolman;

The Year Of The Ransom, a single narrative published as a short volume;

The Shield Of Time, a long tripartite novel.

At the end of The Shield..., Manse Everard and Wanda Tamberly learn the real purpose of the Time Patrol and start a relationship.

There were two possible ways to continue the series from this point and Anderson did both:

"Death and the Knight" is a short sequel to The Shield...;

however, before that, "Star of the Sea" was a long prequel to The Year Of The Ransom.

"Star..." fits in when it does because it informs us of Everard's brief relationship with Janne Floris before he met Wanda Tamberly in The Year Of The Ransom.

The narrative order is slightly more complicated than that but not by much more.

Kaor, Paul!

The primary reason I purchased a copy of THE GUARDIANS OF TIME was because it included Samdra Miesel's essay "Of Time and the Rover."

Aside from a scattering of articles by other writers Miesel's essays and monograph AGAINST TIME'S ARROW has been the only serious Andersonian commentaries I've seen pub. in English. And your efforts in this blog!

Ad astra! Sean
