Near the end, a single sentence links this story back to the earlier period of the Psychotechnic History:
"Something of [Pete's] training in self-integration came back, psychophysical habits, a shaking sort of calm." (p. 18)
Despite the banning of the Psychotechnic Institute, the Solar Union government had continued to employ psychotechnicians and the Order of Planetary Engineers had continued to use psychodynamic techniques. Now, despite the interruption of the Second Dark Ages, primary school children in the Solar System are trained in self-integration. Later, in "The Pirate," a distinction will be made between beings that are either integrate or unintegrate. Raptor cultures still exist. We need to be told more about integrate cultures. We see more of Earth in The Peregrine although its culture is cerebral. Coordinators who join the chaotic Nomads approach a synthesis and preserve knowledge through the Third Dark Ages. A vaster narrative emerges from the individual instalments.
