Tamberly And The Tulat

The Shield Of Time, PART FOUR, 13,212 B. C., III.

Conversing with Aryuk, Wanda Tamberly thinks:

"In spring, for whatever reason, the invaders will pull up stakes. But I'm not allowed to predict that." (p. 207)

Indeed, leaving is not yet on the Cloud People's/Mammoth Slayer's agenda and Tamberly knows only that it will happen, not yet that she herself will deliberately cause it.

When she realizes how much the Tulat have suffered, Tamberly has to get away from them for a while. Walking away from Aryuk while he stands watching her, she thinks:

"I guess I am doing the right thing." (p. 208)

The text continues:

"A flaw of wind whirled down to rattle skinny boughs. She hastened her steps upward. Aryuk shouldn't see her cry." (ibid.)

The wind comments. This time, the wind is a "flaw" and the "skinny boughs" surely represent the Tulat, weak and defenceless before the invaders. Tamberly will begin to intervene in ways that draw down disapproval.

Kaor, Paul!

And in ways which nearly got her cashiered from the Patrol!

She can't predict the departure of the Cloud People because if she did, it probably wouldn't happen!

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

And if she had, that almost certainly would have got her sentenced to the exile planet.
