Poul Anderson, Starfarers (New York, 1999).
Another group of explorers has spent three Terrestrial years on a Tau Cetian planet that will be called Harbor and will be the site of a Kith village. In Chapter 2, we see Jean Kilbirnie and Tim Cleland among the explorers on Harbor.
In Chapter 17, the Monument Stone, in a preKithic language, commemorates Jean Kilbirnie and Tim Cleland of the first expedition. They are historical figures but not dead because they are in the Envoy.
Jean says, "'We Scots can wax unco sentimental.'" (p. 24)
Uncouth. Uncommonly? Anderson gets Jean's Scottish speech right - and I am out of here.

Kaor, Paul!
The impression I get from context is that the dialect term "unco" means "uncommonly."
