"'Aye,' Gisgo said, 'that was an eldritch journey, 'twas. Bad time of year, equinox drawing nigh, and those there Sinim from who knows where, carrying misfortune in their bones for aught we knew.'"
-Time Patrol, p. 314.
Here is another seamless synthesis of historical fiction with science fiction. Peering back through the decades, Gisgo describes both a sea journey that he has made and a time journey that Everard will make. References to the time of year and the bad conditions are appropriate. "...eldtrich..." suggests the uncanny or supernatural but that is how Gisgo must perceive the temporal vehicles, "'...things in heaven, like yonder winged bull...'" (p. 315), that were suddenly in combat above his ship.
The "Sinim," really from who knows when, are the Exaltationist time criminals whom Everard is tracking. Gisgo is startled that Everard's companion, Pum, so closely resembles his ship mate, Adiyaton. Of course he does. Now that he is on the right track, Everard will put Pum aboard that ship as "Adiyaton." (We do not know this yet but it is the sort of detail that you develop an eye for when you get used to time travel fiction.)
Everard wants to apprehend the Exaltationists and Gisgo describes what he saw of their apprehension. The job has been done although Everard still has to do it.
