Friday's Accusations

"The Troublemakers."

The Pioneer has been in flight for 80 years.
Gomez has been captain for 43 years.
Evan Friday is 24.
Friday will be 67 when the Pioneer reaches Alpha Centauri.

Found guilty of sedition, Friday says that he has been framed and then makes a list of accusations:

mismanagement
selfishness
treachery
venality
tyrannies
revolutions
tensions
hatreds
corruptions
social evils
power struggles
oppression
officers, a tyrant caste
crew, an ignorant mob

If he has been saying all this, then someone will have called it "sedition"!

It will eventually be disclosed that all of this was allowed to happen as the only way of getting seven thousand people to Alpha Centauri. An ignorant mob! They are being manipulated instead of being given the knowledge and understanding to enable them to manage their own lives and their voyage to Alpha Centauri. Psychotechnics ought to be about that.

Kaor, Paul!

And I firmly believe humans will still manage to fight and quarrel in a generation star ship, no matter how carefully run it might be.

Sean: yup. I'd go for suspended animation as far as possible.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

The problem is that I don't think suspended animation has been shown to work for human beings. As yet.

I think I would go with having a century or more of experience with societies in O'Neill style habitats within the solar system, before sending one such habitat to a nearby star.

Kaor, Jim!

I agree, that makes sense. We have to expect unsuspected problems and setbacks with something as still untried as O'Neill habitats.

Well, hibernation is common among mammals. Once biology is a thoroughly 'solved' science, I see no reason it couldn't be induced in human beings.

It was being developed in the Psychotechnic History, based on study of Martian organisms.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I can see suspended animation being someday possible for human beings.
