Futures

In some sf, like Poul Anderson's Technic History and The Star Fox, Earth becomes unified and deals with other intelligent species. Gunnar Heim's crew includes a Hungarian and a Naqsan. We have just barely started on the first part of this process. The guy on the supermarket checkout spoke English with an accent so I asked whether he was Polish and learned that he was Bulgarian. I affirmed that we are all British here.

Some other sf, like Anderson's Psychotechnic History, Maurai History, Twilight World and Vault Of The Ages, shows a long recovery from nuclear war. We are also taking some steps in that direction! I need hardly elaborate.

In the Technic History, Ythrians of the New Faith see the shadow of God the Hunter across the future. This is, figuratively, the case for each of us as an individual but hopefully not for the planet or the species any time soon.

Kaor, Paul!

No, not everyone in the UK can claim to be British until he is naturalized and takes the oath of allegiance to the UK.

Sean,

Meanwhile some of us welcome every immigrant anyway.

I do not. Many millions of Americans are outraged at the millions of illegals swarming into the US since that corrupt bungler "Josip" abandoned the borders it was his job to police and protect.

National sovereignty is essential to democracy; what democracy means is rule by -a- people in -a- sovereign state.

You can have sovereignty without democracy, but you can't have democracy without sovereignty.

And control of borders is an essential part of sovereignty.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I absolutely agree with all the points you made.

Considering how carelessly the word "democracy" gets tossed around, I've sometimes thought we should call what we mean by that word "non-violent competitive politics."

Sean: except that description covers limited-franchise electoral politics too.
