An Imperial Resident

Distinguished Citizen Martin Lagard from Atheia, Terran Imperial Resident on Diomedes, must:

assist Imperials in their businesses and problems;
oversee collection of information about Diomedes;
put this information into the proper form for Terran data banks;
collect taxes;
advise native leaders;
use the marines only as a last resort;
speak for the natives to representatives of the Crown.

He has also tried to:

repair the sentinel system, left in poor condition by the Imperial civil war;
address the problems of the migrant societies which, unlike sedentary Diomedeans with their home industries, had become more dependent on extra-planetary commerce, again disrupted by the civil strife;
help a requested sector Intelligence team which, Flandry discovers, was led by Aycharaych!

(Civil war facilitates infiltration by an external enemy.)

Hi, Paul!

Interesting, in A KNIGHT OF GHOSTS AND SHADOWS we get a closer look at the duties of Imperial residents. We get a briefer, less detailed look at an Imperial resident in "The Game of Glory." And, in THE DAY OF THEIR RETURN we get a glimpse of a wider scale of Imperial administration when Chunderban Desai was reviewing the latest mail from Terra.

Sean,
Yes, the details to be found on careful rereading seem to be literally endless but they can't really be, can they?

Hi, Paul!

What Poul Anderson "packed" so skillfully into his stories and novels only SEEMS to be infinite! (Smiles)
