Nicholas van Rijn wears long ringlets in the style of his youth. This symbolizes a lot about differences between generations. Van Rijn's granddaughter, Coya Conyon, thinks:
"My grandfather's generation seldom bothered to get married. My father's did. And mine, why, we're reviving patrilineal surnames." (p. 342)
In my lifetime, things have moved in the opposite direction. It is interesting to see such changes reversed in a further future.
Hirarouk speaks fluent Anglic but needs to use a vocalizer. Right. Interspecies communication should not be made too easy. Van Rijn is able to reply in Planha but he also continues to mangle Anglic and this is where he says:

I am going to reread more of The Return Of Sherlock Holmes before turning in.

Of course, there are going to be reversals back and forth in mores and customs, and sometimes there should be reversals.
