The Time Patrol, 1850-2000

Time Patrol Western headquarters for the 1850-2000 period is in London, 1890-1910. Its front is Dalhousie & Roberts, import house. Appropriately, I think, this firm is described as:

"...solid, conservative..."
-Poul Anderson, "Time Patrol" IN Anderson, Time Patrol (Riverdale, NY, December 2010), pp. 1-53 AT 3, p. 21.

What else was it going to be? In accordance with this image, Dalhousie has not installed electric lighting in 1894.

On 3 November 1885, Dalhousie & Roberts, Importers, is described as:

"...the Time Patrol's London base in this milieu..."
-Poul Anderson, "The Year of the Ransom" IN Time Patrol, pp. 641-735 AT pp. 667-668.

Thus, in 1890, Dalhousie transitions from London base to milieu HQ. Manse Everard visits Dalhousie in 1894 and, much later on his world line, in 1885. There are obvious possibilities of returning to 1894 and observing or surreptitiously interacting with his younger self although such interventions are discouraged unless necessary.

That's against Time Patrol policy -- you can see how causal lines would get hopelessly tangled.

And I would presume that all Time Patrol personnel are recorded when they make a time-jump.

Kaor, Paul!

I'm also assuming Dalhousie & Roberts did actual, real work as importers, both to protect its cover as a Patrol front and get some funds for local operations.

Sean: probably -- it would be obvious if they didn't, in the face-to-face economy of the time.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

Exactly! And it would be difficult to entirely fake such a business even now--esp. if inquisitive persons started nosing around. Better/safer to do real work.

Ian Fleming's "Universal Export" - front for MI6 - manages not to do any exporting!

Kaor, Paul!

Probably because everybody on either side of the Iron Curtain knew what it really was.
