Past And Future

Poul Anderson's The Corridors Of Time makes historical references to the German occupation of Denmark and to a Ukrainian rebellion in the twentieth century as well as to many events much further in the past as when Lockridge looks at a dolmen:

"...as if for some assurance of eternity." (CHAPTER THREE, p. 24)

- and reflects that:

"...a vanished people raised [the upright stones] to be a tomb for their dead." (ibid.)

Poul Anderson's works make us aware of times past or future and sometimes, as in this case, of both. As we reread, we remind ourselves that, in The Corridors..., this history carries humanity forward not to Technic civilization or to the Star Masters but to "time wardens." The Wardens and Rangers who precede the time wardens are based in the future but wage war throughout history, hence Storm's mysterious recruitment of Lockridge which has yet to be explained as CHAPTER THREE proceeds.

Kaor, Paul!

And we also see references to the German occupation of Denmark in THREE HEARTS AND THREE LIONS. I recall as well Holger Carlsen's reflections that King Christian X and his gov't did the brave thing, not fleeing into exile but accepting German "protection," hoping to ameliorate the harshness of that occupation.

Note that Ukraine -is- now independent, and fighting to keep it that way.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

I hope Ukraine succeeds in defeating the shambolic wreck which is now Russia.

Lenin and his successors have so much to answer for--not least among their crimes being the destruction of Russia!

Sean: very true. If there hadn't been a Bolshevik Revolution (and assuming that would mean no National Socialists in Germany) there would probably be about 60 million more Russians and around 20 million more Ukrainians.

Kaor, Mr. Stirling!

Absolutely! The Provisional Gov't should have shot the traitor Lenin and his chief cronies when it had the chance to do that during the July Days.

What a catastrophe Marxism has been!

Sean,

You know that many intelligent informed people disagree with you on these issues. You know also that there are more than just two views on the matter. Continued learning and discussion are necessary. Stating your view as if it were the single, simple, indisputable truth of the matter is inappropriate. It sounds to me as if you are trying to convince yourself. Certainly the disagreements remain and will continue whatever you say on the matter.

What a catastrophe the present global economic system is!

Kaor, Paul!

What matters is facing up to hard facts, no matter how unpalatable to any of us. Marxism has failed every time that nonsense has been tried, always bloodily under brutal and tyrannical regimes.

And that was Anderson's view as well, btw.

Sean,

I am facing up to hard facts. I have replied endlessly about how many times Marxism has been tried. Saying that free enterprise will still operate when abundance makes a market economy redundant is nonsense. (I am throwing the word, "nonsense," back just to make a point, of course!)

Of course what you say was Anderson's view! My view happens to be the opposite.

Paul.
