Substance In Series II

The previous post referred directly or indirectly to thirty four instalments of Poul Anderson's Technic History, which still leaves:

3 pre-League instalments
2 Avalonian
4 post-Imperial

So the total Technic History equals two main sections plus a further nine significant narratives. In fact, the fourth post-Imperial instalment presents a third main stage of interstellar civilization, a new turning point and a new beginning...

As JRR Tolkien wrote of The Lord of the Rings, "It is too short." That reads as if it had been written for effect but is literally true both of Tolkien's Trilogy and of Anderson's Technic History.

Kaor, Paul!

Yes, I well remember how Tolkien expressed dissatisfaction with THE LORD OF THE RINGS after it was published--because it was too short! E.g., I think I remember him saying, among other things, the siege of Minas Tirith should have been longer.

And similar things could be said about Anderson's Technic stories, despite his wish to go on to other themes after THE GAME OF EMPIRE. We have both discussed many gaps, omissions, and mysteries in the Technic stories--and wished Anderson had filled in some of those lacunae.

Ad astra! Sean
