Cells

We Claim These Stars, CHAPTER X.

"...it was only a matter of time before [the Ardazirho] started questioning humans in detail, under drugs and duress. Then you needed cells, changing passwords, widely scattered boltholes, or your underground was done for." (p. 65)

I have read of "cells" but never experienced the need to organize in such a manner.

"The other eighteen men consisted of cells of three (Blofeld accepted the Communist triangle system for security reasons) from six national groups and, within these groups, from six of the world's great criminal and subversive organizations."
-Ian Fleming, Thunderball (London, 1961), 5, p. 43.

But, if they are sitting around a table together, then the members of these six cells are known to each other which means that they are not "cells" as I understand the term.

The six organizations represented in SPECTRE are:

the Mafia
SMERSH
the Gestapo
the Yugoslav Secret Police
Blofeld's own former RAHIR

Kaor, Paul!

What I thought was it was foolish of Fleming to have so many subversive, criminal, and terrorists leaders meeting at one place. If any were captured by the legitimate police and military, it's a certainty some would spill all they knew about Blofeld and SPECTRE.

Sean,

These "cell" members wouldn't but one of the scientific experts does.

One thing which has puzzled me about that list of villains you took from Fleming's THUNDERBALL was the inclusion of the Gestapo. After Germany's defeat and surrender in 1945, the Gestapo ceased to exist as an official, formal, government agency. So it seemed odd to see it on that lkst.

Of course I know there were many surviving ex-Gestapo, some of whom eventually worked for the Soviet KGB or joined Communist East Germany's secret police, the Stasi. And there were others drifting around West Germany and the world, but I don't know of any truly serious ex-Gestapo terrorist organizations.

Sean,

I should have said "ex-." And they did not have their own organization. Blofeld recruited them direct to SPECTRE. Equally, the "SMERSH" men were "ex-."

That clarifies matters! EX-Gestapo and ex-SMERSH.
