The Three Roots Of Poul Anderson's Technic History

In the period, 1951-'61, three roots grew together: Flandry; Argos; van Rijn.

Flandry defended the Terran Empire;
Argos founded an interstellar Empire;
van Rijn was an interstellar merchant.

Then, in two different stories, Flandry revealed that:

his Terran Empire had been founded by Argos;
van Rijn had lived earlier.

Thus, three originally independent narratives became a single future history series to which fresh strands, like the Long Night, David Falkayn and the Ythrians, could later be added.

We are currently in the earliest phase, the Chaos. My diary had four events for tomorrow. Three have been cancelled. Sheila and I are in the age range most at risk from the current pandemic. Our present interacts with its possible futures and with the shadow of God the Hunter but, meanwhile:

High is heaven and holy.

Kaor, Paul!

And the most important link, of course, came from Anderson's impulsive mentioning of "Polesotechnarch van Rijn" in THE PLAGUE OF MASTERS/EARTHMAN, GO HOME. All the other linkings sprang from that!

I certainly hope you, Mrs. Shackley, and every body else we know, and as many others as possible, will not be infected by the Coronavirus!

Ad astra! Sean
