How To End A Story

"Territory."

"They went down the mountain toward sunset, with cheers at their back and campfires twinkling below to welcome them. Somehow the view seemed brighter to Joyce than ever erenow. And there was beauty in that illimitable westward plain, where free folk wandered through their own lives." (p. 75)

The Ingredients
Sunset: an ending;
cheers: a happy ending;
welcoming campfires;
a brighter view;
a beautiful plain - even on this Hellish planet!;
the thought of free folk wandering the plain.

We gather that all went well. The very end of the story on the following page is the suggestion that something might happen between Joyce and van Rijn, "...a very interesting person..." (p. 76)

Kaor, Paul!

As I've said, I've found "Territory" more than usually funny when it comes to Old Nick! I've even wondered if Joyce Davisson was mentioned in MIRKHEIM as one of those ex mistresses of van Rijn who remember him affectionately.

Ad astra! Sean
