"'Satan is aprowl in Armorica.'"
-Poul and Karen Anderson, The Dog And The Wolf, Chapter XVIII, section 2, p. 361.
Nemeta says that the Three of Ys would not let Dahut stay dead. The bishop and the witch can agree that powerful malevolent supernatural beings are at work.
Nagon Demari intones against the wind:
"'Nemeta, daughter of Gratillonius, you are a pagan and a witch. Your unholy rites are banned by the law...I arrest you...'"
-Chapter XIX, section 4, p. 381.
As soon as he finishes speaking:
"Thunder followed, louder and nearer." (ibid.)
Thunder and the threat to Nemeta approach together. The thunder had been prepared for. In section 3, a bleak summer with chill rains and pale sun was followed by oppressive heat, then thunderheads, overcast and windless waiting. The thunder started at the beginning of section 4 and came nearer with Nagon.
Evirion finds something useful to do, kill Nagon and rescue Nemeta! The cast of the novel is being eliminated. Who has died so far?
Magnus Maximus;
The Nine;
Maeloch;
Niall;
Rufinus;
Apuleius;
Nagon.

Kaor, Paul!
And if my memory is correct, Nagon was acting AGAINST the wishes or even orders of Procurator Bacca, who had a more realistic view of the political situation. But anger and hatred had overwhelmed whatever good sense Nagon had!

Kaor, Paul!
And you could have added Gunnung Ivarsson to the list of characters who had died or been killed. Dahut had tried to seduce Gunnung but had, instead, been outwitted by him. But Gunnung was eventually killed by Maeloch for "defaming" Dahut.
