Are the gods active in the world or only in the human imagination? Poul Anderson's fiction covers every option. Gods are viewpoint characters in some of Anderson's fantasy novels. In The King Of Ys Tetralogy (with Karen Anderson), the gods do not appear but do visibly make their mark. Other works are set in the world as we experience it, i.e., some characters believe in gods or God whereas others do not. Finally, all these kinds of worlds coexist in a multiverse with some limited travel between universes. Our world is one of many possible universes whether or not it is also one of many actual universes. Fiction imaginatively actualizes multiple possibilities.
In James Blish's After Such Knowledge Trilogy, demons are believed in in Volumes I and III and are real in Volume II which is the real dramatic climax.
Gods and demons are a major part of world mythologies.
