Planetary Heroes

Some fictional characters travel to another planet and become the hero of that planet:

Kal-El, Earth;
John Carter, Mars;
Flash Gordon, Mongo;
Adam Strange, Rann.

Is there an equivalent in Poul Anderson's comprehensive canon? Almost but not quite. Dominic Flandry's liberation of Unan Besar would make him a heroic figure on that planet. However, to parallel Kal-El, Carter etc more closely, Flandry would have to be of a different species from the people liberated. Further, he would have to either stay on Unan Besar or frequently return there to perform more heroic acts. However, he would become a legend and possibly a hero of fictional narratives on Unan Besar. In his own series, Flandry is the kind of sf hero who has adventures on different planets.

He saves the Scothans from the disastrous consequences of their imperialism and plays a pivotal role on Dennitza although the historical figures popularly remembered there are Gospodar Bodin and St. Kossara.

Kaor, Paul!

And Polesotechnarch van Rijn was a legendary figure on Unan Besar, as we see in Chapter VI of THE PLAGUE OF MASTERS.

And I think Flandry did return to Unan Besar at least once, to make sure Biocontrol was overthrown and a far better system of producing and distributing antitoxin was set up.

Ad astra! Sean
