Later Written Instalments Set Earlier

After The Guardians Of Time came:

Time Patrolman
The Year Of The Ransom
The Shield Of Time

Time Patrolman was an original collection of:

"Ivory, and Apes, and Peacocks"
"The Sorrow of Odin the Goth"

PART ONE of The Shield... (really just a six-page prelude) makes clear that Manse Everard has experienced the events of "Ivory...," The Year... and PART ONE in quick succession. Further, the later written "Death and the Knight" follows directly from the end of The Shield... Thus, these four works form a continuous sequence, leaving only "The Sorrow..." unaccounted for.

However, "Star of the Sea," published between The Shield... and "Death...," makes clear that it is set between "The Sorrow..." and The Year... At last there is a comprehensive order, furthermore reorganizing the original publication order.

The Guardians..., Time Patrolman and The Year... become redundant as separate volumes because their contents are incorporated along with the two later stories into the omnibus collection, Time Patrol, leaving only the tripartite novel, The Shield..., as a distinct volume.

We are informed that Manse Everard has also been:

in Scandinavia during the Viking period;
in the London of Elizabeth I;
with Bjarni Herjulfsson crossing the Atlantic;
in some parts of post-history.

These incidents could have become later written instalments inserted between earlier instalments.
