Varagan Returns

Poul Anderson, "The Year of the Ransom" IN Anderson, Time Patrol (Riverdale, NY, 2010), pp. 641-735.

Manson Everard of the Time Patrol and Merau Varagan of the Exaltationists met for the first time in South America in 1826 in "Ivory, and Apes, and Peacocks." It was the first time for both. For time travellers, this need not have been the case but Poul Anderson avoided that complication. Everard and Varagan meet only twice. Both meetings occur in "Ivory..." although the second meeting was continued in The Shield Of Time.

But between his two meetings with Everard, Varagan also met Stephen Tamberly of the Time Patrol in Machu Picchu on 15 April 1610:

"'Will it help if I introduce myself? Merau Varagan. If you have heard of my race, it is probably under the name of the Exaltationists.'" (p. 660)

If we are to follow the four stages of the war between the Patrol and the Exaltationists, then this is the order in which they occur:

Everard and Varagan
Tamberly and Varagan
Everard and Varagan
Everard and Raor

Elaborate? Yes. Anywhere as near as complicated as it might have been? No.

Kaor, Paul!

Merau Varagan was obviously a very able and intelligent man, even a charming one. Unfortunately, he was a callous nihilist.

Ad astra! Sean
